    Frequently Asked Questions

VUMI caters to expats and locals up to age 74.

VUMI Universal Medical Cover provides a balanced mix of value and benefits. It covers illnesses and injuries requiring overnight hospitalization (inpatient cover) and offers optional coverage for routine outpatient care, maternity, or dental expenses. Inpatient benefits typically include room and board, surgeries, treatments, hospitalization, and emergency evacuation. Policies are managed on an annual basis, meaning you pay for a year of coverage and the insurer covers your eligible expenses up to a set limit. Benefit levels include inpatient limits of $3,000,000 to $5,000,000; outpatient limits starting at $2,500 up to the inpatient limit; maternity limits of $12,500 to $20,000; and dental limits of $3,000 to $4,500.

VUMI generally offers worldwide coverage, but also provides an Asia coverage area that excludes China, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea.

Since private health insurance is a for-profit business, individuals with pre-existing conditions are considered higher risk. Insurers use medical underwriting to assess risk and may exclude certain conditions, impose an additional fee (loading), or offer to reassess a condition at a later date. Some insurers provide a moratorium period—typically 2 years—for non-chronic conditions. Employer groups of certain sizes may qualify for policies that disregard individual medical history. VUMI VIP Universal Medical Cover follows a full medical underwriting model; applicants with significant chronic conditions may sometimes be denied coverage, while milder conditions are typically accepted without loading.

Premiums are set annually and may increase based on factors such as past-year performance, claims experience, and medical inflation. VUMI’s plans use a community rating model, meaning any premium or benefit changes apply uniformly across the plan. Some insurers also use an experience rating approach, which can result in varying increases. Age is a significant factor as well—if your health declines with age, your risk increases, potentially leading to larger premium hikes, especially if age bands are used.

No. VUMI offers direct billing for both inpatient and outpatient services. This means that payment for your treatment is managed directly between the insurer and the hospital or clinic, so you do not have to pay at the time of treatment

While VUMI’s international health plans are managed on an annual basis, you have the option to make periodic payments instead of a lump sum. For VUMI, the fees for installment payments are 6% for monthly, 4% for quarterly, and 2% for semi-annual payments.

VUMI is not currently offering employer group plans.
